What size and where it goes
Split-face / angular, 5–10 cm (2–4 in), one box 20 kg / 44 lb. Wall electrics and any heater whose manual says 5–10 cm. Good visible pile on Spirit or a stainless Wall if you want the wet-black look. Not a 10–15 cm wood-stove fill.
Before you pile
Rinse the rocks in a tub or with a hose before they go in the heater. Factory dust will smell on the first heat if you skip it. Pile loose so air can move — a jammed cage cooks elements and kills löyly. Cover the elements on an electric; do not rest a boulder on a bend in the coil.

Do I need to rinse them? Yes. Wash the dust off before you pile.
Which size for my heater? 5–10 cm for most electric wall heaters. 10–15 cm for wood stoves and large floor electrics. HUUM CLIFF/STEEL want 3–5 cm; DROP/HIVE/CORE and HUUM wood want 5–10 cm. If the manual disagrees with a rule of thumb, the manual wins.
