Outdoor Barrel Sauna Buying Guide: Size, Heater, Power and Foundation
Share
An outdoor barrel sauna is one of the simplest ways to add a sauna at home. It’s a round cabin of thick wooden staves held by steel bands, set on cradles in the yard. Before you buy one, you need to settle six things: size and seating, the front style, the wood, the heater, the electrical work and the base. This guide covers each one using the SaunaLife barrels we sell, then walks through freight delivery.
1. Size and person count
SaunaLife’s Ergo barrels come in three lengths. Every Ergo barrel gives you 6 ft 5 in of interior height, so most people can stand upright. The Ergo Elegance barrels (EE) are wider, with a 7 ft 3 in interior diameter on the EE6G and a full glass front.
| Barrel | Seats up to | Outside size (approx.) | Heater range |
|---|---|---|---|
| E6 / E6W | 3 | 59" across × 81" tall | 4.5–6 kW |
| E7 / E7W / E7G | 4 | 71" deep × 81" tall | 6–8 kW |
| E8 / E8W / E8G | 6 | 87" deep × 81" tall | 8–9 kW |
| EE6G | 4 | 63" long × 91" diameter | 8–9 kW |
| EE8G | 6 | 79" long × 91" diameter | 8–9 kW |
“Seats up to” is the maximum. If you like to lie down on the bench, or you usually sauna with one or two people, sizing up one step gives you more room. Most models also come in a factory-painted black B version, such as the E8B and E6B. See every model in outdoor saunas.
2. Front and rear: wood, window or glass
The letter after the number tells you the layout. The standard E6, E7 and E8 have a bronze glass door and a solid wood rear wall. A W model adds a rear window, and a G model has a full glass front. Glass looks great and lets in light, but it holds less heat than a wood wall. That’s why the E7G lists the same 6–8 kW range as the E7 but notes that glass needs more heater than a wood-front barrel of the same size. For glass-heavy barrels, plan on the high end of the range. Our heater sizing guide explains how glass changes the math.
3. The wood
SaunaLife builds its Ergo barrels from full-length Thermo-Spruce staves about 1.65 in thick. Thermo-Spruce is spruce that has been thermally modified with heat and steam, which SaunaLife uses for its dimensional stability outdoors. The benches and arched backrests are knot-free Thermo-Aspen. On the E8, SaunaLife lists stainless steel barrel bands (1-7/8 in wide), a black shingle roof kit with drip edges, dual floor drains, intake and exhaust vents, and a heater guard. Wood still moves with heat and humidity, so follow SaunaLife’s outdoor care guide, linked on each product page.
4. Heater pairing
Match the heater to the barrel’s listed range, not to the number of people. Heater, stones and control are sold separately.
- 4.5–6 kW (E6, E6W): Harvia KIP45B, Harvia KIP60B, HUUM DROP 4, HUUM DROP 6
- 6–8 kW (E7, E7W, E7G): Harvia KIP60B, Harvia KIP80B, HUUM DROP 6, HUUM DROP 7
- 8–9 kW (E8, E8W, E8G, EE6G, EE8G): Harvia KIP80B, Harvia Virta HL90E, HUUM DROP 9, HUUM HIVE Mini 9
Prefer a fire? The barrel listings name wood stoves that fit where clearances allow. The smaller barrels list the HUUM HIVE Wood 13, Harvia M3 and the 12 kW Cozy Heat Sauna Stove. The E8 family lists larger stoves such as the HUUM HIVE Wood 17. A wood stove in a barrel needs a chimney through the curved roof. Look at the HUUM Chimney Set — Barrel for HUUM stoves or the Harvia WHP1000500 barrel / flat-roof chimney kit for Harvia stoves. Still deciding on fuel? Read wood vs electric sauna heaters.
One safety note from SaunaLife’s EE6G manual: the included heater guard may not meet the safety distances of every heater. Always follow the clearances in your heater’s own manual.
5. Electrical
With an electric heater, the heater sets the electrical work, not the barrel. Typical US installs of the Harvia KIP and HUUM DROP heaters are 240V, hardwired by a licensed electrician from the heater’s nameplate and manual. We don’t guess breaker sizes. Check the control too:
- Harvia KIP “B” models have dials on the heater.
- HUUM heaters need a HUUM UKU control.
- The Virta HL90E uses a separate Harvia control.
SaunaLife’s Ergo barrels also include a white LED light bar with a Wi-Fi app, so ask your electrician to plan power for the lighting as well. For outdoor runs, follow local code for burial depth and wet-location wiring. A wood stove needs no heater circuit, only the chimney and clearances.
6. The foundation
A barrel sits on its cradles, so the base has to be flat, level and firm, and it has to shed water. SaunaLife’s manuals call for a level at almost every step of the build, and a barrel that starts out of level fights you the whole way. Good options:
- A concrete pad
- Pavers on compacted gravel
- A deck built for the load
For its cabins and tubs, SaunaLife recommends concrete blocks or strips on compacted gravel, with the unit at least three inches above the surrounding ground. That’s sound practice for a barrel too. Leave room around the barrel for the heater’s clearances, the door swing and a path to the door.
Freight delivery and assembly
Barrel saunas ship by freight with curbside-style delivery in the contiguous US. They are not part of the free ground parcel offer, which covers eligible parcel items over $75, such as sauna stones. The freight cost shows at checkout or is confirmed with you at order confirmation. Inspect the delivery and note any visible damage on the receipt before you accept it. Plan how you’ll move the crate from the curb to the pad. Your heater ships separately, also by freight.
SaunaLife designs the Ergo barrels to go together in about a day with two people, using basic tools and a level. The installation manual and dimension drawing are linked on each product page, so you can check the footprint before you order.
Warranty
SaunaLife’s limited warranty covers workmanship defects for two years in residential use, for the original retail buyer. It does not cover heaters or added components, or natural weathering of the wood. Your heater carries its own manufacturer warranty.

FAQ
What size barrel sauna do I need for 4 people?
Among the SaunaLife barrels we sell, the E7 family and the EE6G seat up to 4. For 6 people, look at the E8 family or the EE8G. For up to 3, the E6 and E6W.
What size heater does a barrel sauna need?
Use the range on the barrel’s listing: 4.5–6 kW for the E6 and E6W, 6–8 kW for the E7 models, and 8–9 kW for the E8 models, EE6G and EE8G. More glass pushes you toward the high end.
Does a barrel sauna need a foundation?
It needs a flat, level, firm base that drains. A concrete pad, pavers on compacted gravel, or a deck built for the load all work. SaunaLife’s manuals call for leveling throughout the build.
Is the heater included with a SaunaLife barrel?
No. The heater, stones and control (or the wood stove and chimney) are bought separately. Every barrel listing shows the recommended heater range and matching heaters.
How is a barrel sauna delivered?
By freight, with curbside-style delivery in the contiguous US. The cost shows at checkout or is confirmed at order confirmation. Heaters ship by freight too.
